The 7th annual Middletown Township “Country Bumpkin” Challenge 5K Run/Walk is set for 11 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 18, which begins at the Fair Acres facility, 340 North Middletown Road (Rt. 352 and Old Forge Road).

The professionally timed race begins at Fair Acres and continues on paved roads, which are closed to traffic, through the beautiful Middletown countryside. A water station will be provided halfway through the course, and post-race refreshments will also be served. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three males and females, as well as to the top male and female in each age category. Pre-registration, by the deadline of Oct. 14, is strongly recommended. There is a reduced registration rate in advance, and the first 100 participants will receive free event T-shirts. Mail race registration forms to: Middletown Township Parks and Recreation Dept., P.O. Box 157, Lima PA 19037. Race day registration will begin at 10 a.m.
The event benefits the township’s Parks and Recreation Department, which provides and promotes quality recreational programs and facilities for the betterment of the community and the quality of life of township residents. Also benefitting from the race are two HCI programs, the Matt Coburn Youth Leadership Fund and the Partners In Excellence™ (P.I.E™) Mentoring Program for Penncrest High School students. The Matt Coburn Youth Leadership Fund was established in memory of one of HCI’s board members and greatest supporters. The Fund allows student leaders at Penncrest to take advantage of various leadership conferences through scholarship awards. The HCI (P.I.E™) Mentoring Program is a work and school-based mentoring program that introduces 8th-grade students to small businesses/organizations in their community. These students are paired with employee mentors, starting their freshman year of high school, for an average of two hours a month throughout four years until they graduate. Through the program, students obtain valuable hands-on experience in the workplace and learn life skills. For more information on HCI, visit the new website at www.HCIcares.org, or call 484-442-8532.
In addition to Middletown Township and HCI, other sponsors of the event include the Middletown Township Business and Professional Association; BeneServ Employee Benefit Services; Hollywood Landscaping.com; Sunrise Assisted Living® at Granite Run; Peking Restaurant and the Fair Acres Geriatric Center.
Pre-registration race fees, if paid by Oct. 14, are: Adults, $15; students (age 10-22), $12; children under 10, free; and groups of 10 or more, $10 per person. After the pre-registration period, the cost will be $20 for all participants.
